bellissima!

My feel-good secret for a monday is to write a blog post about a beautiful wedding. Works every time – warm feeling inside, love the world; feels like Friday!

So I’ve been saving this one up since last week, because I knew it would be a little gem to write about. Emily Rickard is a brilliant stylist, born in Britain, and just moved to New York from Australia. When I saw her wedding photos – courtesy of a friend of a friend, who knows I am always on the look-out for the most super-stylish weddings – I knew that it was a extra special wedding that simply had to be shared on our blog.

From the picturesque Italian backdrop to the unpretentious, wholesome but edgy wedding details, we think Emily captured the essence of the wedding day perfectly in her white wedding dress with black sash, nails and shoes – elegant and delicate, but with a seductively stylish and bold stamp.

It was her dream wedding, and it was a total dreamy composing this blog post about it! The images show what a totally stunning day it was. There are quite a few photos but it was impossible to edit – they were just all too good!

We can feel the love, we’re sure you can too.

How did you get engaged? Tell us the story…

“We went to New York for a trip to scope it out for living here and were extremely jet-lagged having flown Sydney – London – New York. Unbeknownst to me Daryl had planned to propose in a restaurant on the first night we arrived but we were too tired to go out. We woke up SUPER early on our second day, around 4.30am. He suggested walking across the Brooklyn Bridge to watch the sunrise. When we got to the middle of the bridge, we had a one in a million chance…. there was nobody around, which never happens! And he got down on one knee……how wonderfully special and romantic!”

Was there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

“We chose to get married in Le Marche, Italy because my Mum lives there. It is a small medieval town, but she also owns an olive farm with a gloriously run down old farmhouse. The combination of these two things are paramount to what I wanted for the style of a wedding…. A little bit of vintage mixed with a little bit of country – sprinkled with a touch of class! I chose this theme because it’s normally what I like to bring into a styling project, and there is just so much to love aesthetically about a vintage wedding, but coupled with a bit of Italian style it made it, for me, more current. Having a hint of ‘country’ is very close to my heart, as I grew up in the country – so I combined these elements to create our wedding.”

What were your key styling items?

“I chose someplain white Cotton Bunting from notonthehighstreet.com, recycled tomato and bean tins for the flower arrangements, Chalk Board Paint for the seating plan and guest book, lots of paper and glass lanterns, mixed with jam jar votives to hang in the trees and in the tent. Then we had custom made beer mats for favours.”

Did your wedding turn out as you dreamt it would?

“It was the most wonderful day and I could not have wished for more. Despite being a stylist, and a little bit picky… we put the main emphasis of our wedding on spending time with our guests and soaking in the local atmosphere. Although there was a lot of attention to detail, we didn’t get hung up on the small things, and therefore nothing could have been disappointing to us! It spanned over four days, lots of dinners, the wedding day and even a post-wedding picnic. Needless to say none of it would have been possible without our AMAZING florist, Zoe Ivory – Phan, and her team of gorgeous bridesmaids and our close friends.”

What was your one wedding tip?

“Remember to take the day as slowly as you can, and soak in every detail. Take a few minutes to yourself as bride and groom away from everyone. It will be one moment you want to remember!”

Thank you so much to Emily and Daryl for sharing their day with us – how useful to be a stylist when it comes to planning your wedding day! It resulted in a magazine-ready photo shoot of a wedding day, with memories that were perfectly created, captured and will be treasured forever. Bellissima!

our wedding story…Lisa and Theo

Meet Lisa and Theo, who have kindly agreed to share the story of their recent engagement and initial wedding plans with us. Lisa is the Event Manager and a Head Makeup Artist for Benefit (who are also one of our blog sponsors). We have been working with Lisa on a few cool projects (watch this space) and were super-excited to hear of her recent engagement! Here is their story…

How did you get engaged?

Theo proposed in Croatia about two months ago. We were on holiday with eight of our best mates and it was pretty much the best holiday ever! I had a sneaking suspicion he would use the holiday to pop the question, but by day-three any thought of that was out of my mind – I was thinking, “he definitely would have done it by now”!

On the last night of our holiday we were all enjoying a lovely meal in our villa, reminiscing about how brilliant the holiday had been, when the moment came! ‘Our’ song came on the ipod, but I was completely oblivious about why and was casually saying how we both love the song. Then I noticed that Theo had stood up and suddenly our friends started crying and reaching to take out their cameras and phones to capture the moment. He made a beautiful (yet very Theo) speech about why he loved me and gave me the most beautiful ring that he had designed himself. It was perfect.

There was one funny moment though…as I was sitting next to him all evening and would have spotted a ring box in his pocket a mile off, he had to keep it in his pants all the way through dinner!

Is there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

We have about three big parties at our house every year and we love it. So, though our wedding doesn’t have a specific theme, we want it to be like one massive party and for everyone to enjoy themselves! We’re planning to have a big garden wedding at my Dad’s house and want to serve picnic and tapas style food. We just want the day to be fun and laid back and have a relaxed but party atmosphere.

Also, my fiancé is ‘obsessed’ with Craig David, so we are running a ‘get Craig to the wedding’ campaign! We’re urging everyone we know to help get him there for our big day and will be doing everything we can to make it happen. Wish us luck and hopefully nearer the day we will be telling you that we’ll be having a star performance at our wedding too!

What are your key gift list items?

We’re having a bit of a quirky, unconventional, DIY gift list. We like to call it ‘kitchen SOS’ as we really want a new kitchen! We’re going to make a cardboard shoebox mock-up of our dream kitchen (complete with little DIY fixtures) and ask our loved ones to buy different parts of it for us. For everyone who kindly contributes a part we are going to have their name put on one of our kitchen tiles. It will remind us every day what each person did for us.

Is your wedding turning out as you dreamt it would?

We have one year to go and so far so good! We have booked some things already but still have lots to do. Planning a wedding is definitely more expensive than we thought but we’re excited about making it all happen!

What is your one wedding tip?

That you should both do exactly what YOU want to do and not worry about anyone else! Make sure your wedding day is about the two of you and reflects your individual personalities, as well as your relationship together.

Thank you so much to Lisa and Theo for sharing their story with us. Their wedding sounds like it will be a very cool affair and we can’t wait to see the pictures…the only problem is we have to wait a whole year!

How did you get engaged?

For a long time I had wanted to take Ant to the place in Cornwall where I spent all my summers as a child. Finally, we both had a week off last August, and took ourselves off on a little road trip. On our second day we went to the beach where I had spent so much time when I was little and I showed him all the rocks we used to explore, the giant rock pool (so lovely, you have to see it!) and the cave we used to swim through. It was such a lovely day and a big trip down memory lane for me! A bit later on when the sun was going down and the beach was emptying out, we were sitting reading our books when Ant got up and wondered over to climb a bit of the cliff up to a little ledge. He was standing up there and waving over at me so I waved back and took a photo, then realised that he wanted me to go over. I was quite happy where I was and really didn’t fancy doing any more climbing so I gestured that I was staying where I was. After a while it became clear that he really wanted me to go over. When I got over there he then wanted me to climb up to join him, and so ensued another session of ‘come on!’ from him and ‘I’m not really up for it’ from me. As you’ve probably guessed, he finally persuaded me to climb up in the end, and when he went down on one knee I nearly fell straight back down again! I can’t really explain the giddy mix of happiness and disbelief, but the sun setting over the sea made it all a bit picture perfect, we were very happy bunnies!

Is there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

We don’t really have a theme and haven’t chosen a specific colour either. However, our wedding location in central London provided the inspiration for our save the dates, which we made to look like travel cards and we continued this by including the London skyline on our invitations. Our reception venue has quite eclectic decor so all we really need to do is fill it with tea lights, flowers and we have a couple of lovely signs from Delightful Living too!

What are your key gift list items?

I adore Lou Rota’s beautiful hummingbird and flamingo tableware and I’ve had my eye on the handmade wooden blanket boxes from Papa Theo for a long time!

Is your wedding turning out as you dreamt it would?

So far, I think so! I know it’s a cliché but I’m just really looking forward to a day where we have as many of our favourite people as possible in one place, eating, drinking, dancing and laughing.

What is your one wedding tip?

Start following wedding blogs – this honestly isn’t just a shameless plug! Blogs like Style Me Pretty, Rock My Wedding, OMG I’m getting married, and Ruffled have been such a brilliant source for everything from venues and suppliers, to styling ideas and tips for making sure the day runs smoothly. Another great place to look for lots of visual inspiration is Pinterest – I can lose whole weekends on there!

Well, the weddings team just can’t wait for this wedding. Congratulations Lou and Ant!

How did you get engaged?

We got engaged in Devon which is where Chris (my future husband) lives. His dog died a few years ago but before she died we always used to take her on this really lovely walk whenever we were in Devon. It’s got beautiful views and a few years ago, when we were walking his dog, I mentioned that it would be the most amazing place to be proposed to as it would be very picturesque. Anyhow, we went to Devon for the weekend last May and he suggested on the Sunday morning that we went for a walk. We ended up driving to Yennadon Down (which is the picturesque place I mentioned above). At this stage I really, really didn’t suspect anything, we were just nattering away about random stuff, as per usual, and then suddenly, while my back was turned and I was harping on about how beautiful the view was, he got down on one knee. I then turned around and my immediate reaction was that he was making fun of me but then he pulled out a little box, said the loveliest things a girl could ever want to hear and asked me to marry him. Needless to say, there were a lot of happy tears shed and lots of yes, yes, yessing.

Is there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

There’s no real theme to our wedding per se, but as we’re getting married in the country I want to try and keep things looking low key. All the flowers are going to look like we’ve gathered them from the garden and our colour scheme is whites and fresh bright greens with little flashes of purple. I also wanted to make sure our wedding felt warm, cosy and romantic so there will be a lot of candlelight.

What are your key gift list items?

Chris and I don’t really have a lot of our own homeware as we’re currently renting a furnished flat, so we’ve put a lot of things on our list that are gorgeous, unique homeware pieces that you wouldn’t find anywhere else – things like Nkuku’s Ebbu candle holders and Roost Living’s wobbly porcelain bowls. Also, as the first flat we lived in together is in Clapham Junction we’re really hoping that some lovely person will give us Barbara Coupe’s very cool London Destinations cushion.

Is your wedding turning out as you dreamt it would?

All I can say at the moment is so far so good. We haven’t had any major hiccoughs yet and everything, dare I say it, seems to be running very smoothly. I haven’t had any bridezilla moments… yet.

What is your one wedding tip?

It’s probably an obvious one but my one tip would be to just try and stay calm. At the end of the day your wedding is about you and your partner, and is about celebrating with the people you love the most and who love you the most. Those people are not going to be bothered if your lipstick’s not the right colour or if it’s pouring with rain.

How did you get engaged? Tell us the story…

We were in New York having dinner on our second last night. We had finished dessert and Peter said “So… serious question… Would you consider becoming Mrs Norrey?” having no idea that he was planning on proposing, I thought he was talking hypothetically. “You can’t ask that kind of question hypothetically” was my vaguely flippant response. “No… I mean… how would you feel about getting married?” he said in a slightly more urgent manner. Completely baffled I responded (quite curtly), “You’re still talking hypothetically, seriously, this is not the kind of thing you can discuss over dinner after a couple of glasses of wine”. Then he said, relatively loudly “NO… I mean… WILL YOU MARRY ME?” That shut me up… “oh….” Completely speechless “oh… oh ok”, then he produced the ring (which my sister had made and I had been lusting after for ages and I burst into tears. On the way back to the hotel we kept stopping, looking at each other and saying “So, we’re engaged then… right?”. It took quite a while to sink in.

Is there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

A summer garden party… we wanted everything to be really relaxed. Just like it would be if we had four friends over. Peter’s not very keen on formal dress and never wears a tie and I’m addicted to bunting, picnics and bright colours!

What are your key gift list items?

Peter’s super keen on getting the kitchen really well kitted out so there are a lot of practical items like knife sets and chopping boards. I however am obsessed with the Caroline McGrath sandcastle bowls and the yellow submarine print from Durnall Designs (my engagement ring is a yellow submarine!!).

Is your wedding turning out as you dreamt it would?

I had never really had ‘the dream wedding’ planned in my head – so in a way ‘yes’ as it’s turning out well so far!

What is your one wedding tip?

Don’t send save the dates until you’ve worked an awful lot out! We got over excited and sent out our save the dates really early. In hindsight, it would have been easier had we’d put together a rough budget and a few lists first!

tell us your wedding story… Nell and Mat

How did you get engaged? Tell us all about it…

We got engaged on an amazing Greek island called Patmos. We had a gorgeous apartment with a terrace overlooking the sea and a very narrow wall which you could walk along (with a scary sheer drop on one side) to get an even better view. Mat was about to pop the question when the owner of the apartments managed to interrupt us by spraying us by accident when watering the garden! After getting over that false start Mat then produced a bottle of champagne and a gorgeous handmade ring by a local jeweller. He knew better than to actually buy me an engagement ring because I’m so particular when it comes to jewellery but wanted to have a ring to give me and I love it. He didn’t attempt to get down on one knee because the wall was so precarious and falling off would have been far worse than being sprayed with water!

Was there a theme/style for your wedding? Why did you choose it?

We had a mixture of two eras, which we used as loose themes – the 1930s and the 1950s. I absolutely love art deco, Poirot and the glamour of that period, and the screen sirens of the 1950s. My dress was a vintage 1950s frock made in New York… I had to have it taken in around the bust because I’m definitely not as well-endowed as the lady who originally wore it… or maybe the underwear at the time gave more assistance! Mat’s brother-in-law is a graphic designer and based our invites on original deco posters, we played music of the period in the church and one of our ‘hymns’ was Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E. We had a 1930s bus which was so cute, we gave each guest an original 1950s game or a vintage handbag and our band was a jive band who regularly play at the 100 Club on Oxford Street.

What were your key wedding gift list items?

We really wanted a Julie Slater weekend bag which we got (hurrah!) and someone bought us some Nick Munro cruets.

Did your wedding turn out as you dreamt it would?

Yes! It was so amazing, overwhelming, and fun all at the same time. It went past so quickly and we tried to savour every moment but there are so many people to speak to and things to take in. Didn’t help that I burst into tears at the altar, oops. The best advice that Holly (Tucker) gave me was to take ten minutes out with your new husband on the day just to reflect on the wonderful thing you’ve just done.

What is your one wedding tip?

Can I have three? Invest in a great make-up artist, florist and caterers. It’ll cost but they take the stress away and ensure that you look beautiful, the venues look amazing and the food is delicious!

bunting success!

When Martin ordered some Marry Me bunting from one of our top sellers Jonny’s Sister, we just had to find out if it did the trick…as you can see from the photograph, Emma said yes! The proposal took place on their holiday to Lake Como, and Martin reported that the bunting nearly eclipsed the ring! Well it is rather gorgeous, even if we do say so ourselves….

Congratulations Martin and Emma!
